Communication, Self-Confidence, Business Strategy, Relational
In 1992, I founded a wealth management firm in Boulder, CO. Determination, foresight, vision and unflagging confidence were required, as with any start-up. I led both the shape of the firm as it evolved and the overall investment strategy and due diligence for any and all investments (though as other employees became shareholders and experience, those decisions were all discussed and made together). In my current role as shareholder with no day-to-day job, I provide strategic guidance and proposals that help our continued evolution and open communication with clients, but most importantly, our employees. Other initiatives (over 205+ years) have included re-organizing the firm into a team structure, aligning salary with short and long-term firm goals (and including shareholders in that equation), engaging an outside professional to implement a decision-making protocol and ensure alignment among shareholders of long-term vision for the firm, and institution of a management committee to transition the firm from its longer-standing mom-and-pop style democratic management format.
