I'm the founder/CEO of LOI English. LOI English is an edu-tech company that teaches English to more than 10,000 students in 138 different countries.
- Entrepreneur/Business Owner
Language Education, Project Management, Recruiting/Team Building, Accounting/Bookkeeping,
I founded LOI English in 2009 and became the CEO. I lead a team of more than 35 teachers, techies, financial gurus and others. My team is completely distributed and I have learned to hire, train, and manage a fully distributed team. I lead the company in our philosophy and methodology and our goals for the future.
I’ve grown the company from 2 teachers to 35 teachers and from 10 students to more than 500 actively engaged students. I’ve helped create the vision for our teaching platform and continue to help guide the technological advances in our platform.
How I Want to Participate in PowerHouse
I’m interested in connecting with more Montana women entrepreneurs and businesswomen to gain advice, create a support network, and share my experience as a ‘mompreneur’
I’d love to have coffee chats in person or via Skype with some other Montana women that are actively engaged in running their own businesses. I’d love to discuss many topics from hiring, to accounting, to growth management and work/life balance. As a mompreneur I’m always looking for ways to simplify my life and business while continuing our growth and success. I’d also like to discuss what it means to be a start-up in Montana where funding isn’t as readily available.
I am born and raised in Montana. I love this state and all the benefits of living a simple life here. I enjoy spending time with my family, skiing, hiking, climbing, biking, and gardening. I’ve also become an avid winter runner and I love winter. As a mompreneur I’m trying to find what many women are looking for, a work/life balance. I’m ambitious with my company and believe it can grow exponentially but I don’t want to lose sight of what’s most important in my life.
What motivates and inspires you?
I’m passionate about learning, education, and language. I love running a company that helps people achieve their goals. When an LOI English student accomplishes a goal or dream, like passing the TOEFL with a high enough score to get into Harvard or landing their dream job in Germany, I feel great. English empowers people, it is a life changing skill. I believe in the company I’ve built and all of the amazing people I have on my team. They inspire me to give everything I have and keep moving forward to grow our company.
Who are your sheroes?
It is hard to choose one individual, so many people are heroic. Each of us has our challenges, our own sadness, and has endured and persevered in life. I think everyone is heroic from my 92 year old grandmother, a tough rancher woman living on the hi-line, to the successful business women through-out Montana to my daughter who embodies the perseverance, light, and love in all of us.
What technology do you love and recommend to others? What about books, ideas or podcasts?
I love Slack, it has made a huge difference to my distributed team of teachers. In fact I wrote an entire blog about how it has changed my company. My favorite book is by Wallace Stegner: Angle of Repose.
How do you reboot?
I love all the typical Montana activities hiking, camping, skiing, being outside in this amazing place and UNPLUGGING . Above all I love doing all of these things with my amazing husband and children. This is the reasons we call Montana home.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
I’m proud of a lot of things I’ve accomplished. I’m most proud of the times and experiences that pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a person. When my husband and I moved to Argentina I had to figure out how to live in a foreign country, as well as a huge city, and learn a new language. I’ve built a successful company that provides jobs to more than 30 people across the globe. I have a wonderful family. All of these things are important and I’m proud of these experiences.
What is the mark you hope to leave on the world?
I hope I have touched some people’s lives with light and love. I hope that I can be a positive example to my children teaching them empathy, humbleness and kindness.
Words of wisdom you want to share with Montana women?
We must reach out to each other. We can build each other up with our shared knowledge and we are stronger working together than we are working alone. This state has a wealth of knowledge, experience, and help. In fact I just met with a brilliant Montana woman because of this great new resource, PowerHouse MT. She gave me a ton of concrete things I can do to help grow LOI English but also awed and inspired me.
