I am currently a college student working on my BSW. There is so much I love about social work, but the area I am most interested in is social justice.

Organizing individuals and groups of people to come together to collaborate on projects.
Being a young progressive college student I am continuously looking for leadership and personal growth workshops to attend. At the beginning of 2018, I attended the Montana Women’s Policy Leadership Institute (WPLI) Conference in Helena. At this training, many topics were discussed including race, racism, economic justice, and defending against federal/state healthcare cuts. This was an incredible experience to be able to come together with a group of women from all across Montana. I was surprised to hear and learn about some of the issues women face in other parts of our state. I think it is important to have an open dialogue and discuss what is working for our state and what is not, and how it will vary for each community.
In early April of 2018, I attended the Montana Racial Equity Project’s Dismantling Hatred Workshop in Bozeman. This workshop taught skills and strategies for dismantling hatred towards historically disadvantaged and marginalized peoples. There is a long way to go before women and women of color reach proportionate representation in leadership roles. Marginalized voices want to see and hear their stories being represented. Being a woman of color myself, I believe it is important that I work hard and to make a seat for myself at the table to continue to work on social justice policies and topics.
How I Want to Participate in PowerHouse
While working during the Legislative Session I found it interesting how strategic the Republican party was about preparing and bringing up a younger generation of men. I didn’t see that happening as much on the Democratic side. I believe PowerHouse Montana can provide the opportunity for women with more lived and learned experience to help mentor and bring up a strong next generation of young women. I think I would be an asset to PowerHouse Montana, even though I am part of the twenty-something crowd my brain is at its peak. Being in my twenties I have a fervent passion and curiosity about people and the world. I am ready to passionately and uninhibitedly go after my goals and help others achieve their goals. The intensity of the twenty-something brain allows for the opportunity to feel strongly about issues, causes, and people. It can start movements, take action, and make commitments. Being a part of the PowerHouse Montana team I believe we can work to lift each other up as we climb.
